GALLERY OF SUES

Behold, in the gallery of Sues, you can gaze upon the face of the blight of all fanfics. Memorize the faces of these atrocious villains and may you recognize them in your own works and purge them before they have a chance to corrupt ye pieces of fiction!

Gallery of the Sues (icons) can be found HERE.

[image] Angst Sue: compensates for her lack of personality with superficial angst for trivial and unimportant issues, like who she should love between Killua and Kurapika. Notorious for lacking depth and genuine character, Angst Sue’s aim in life is to let people know just how torn apart she is on the inside by feeling quite sorry for herself.

    Co-offenders include:
[image] Tragic Sue: Spends her days in the fanfic moping about endlessly recalling how unfortunate she is, what miserable past she’s had and how she is trapped in the vicious cycle that is depression and self-pity. Unlike the Revenge Sue, when her family is killed by some faceless assassin, and the remains of her parents are dangled before her eyes, she’ll wring those tear glands and cry, literally, for chapter after chapter about these traumatic experiences and expect everyone else to do something about it.

[image] Angry Sue: A mirror image of the Tragic Sue, Angry Sue proudly sports “anti-social” on her lapel and continually harasses all the characters about the issues and things which annoy her, piss her off and make her generally angry at the world. It is just another way of extorting sympathy from the canon characters. Pity there’s none coming from where it matters most - the reader. Angry Sue will inadvertently portray herself as a spoilt-brat because the stuff she’s angry about, eg. parent control, ‘no one understands me coz I’m so different’ are pointless and poserish.

[image] Revenge Sue: She is a mix of both the Tragic and Angry Sue, and a little better in that she purports to do something about all her unhappily festering emotions. Revenge Sue knows no other purpose in life other than to track down the murderer of her parents/brothers/sisters/loved ones/hamster. However, Revenge Sue usually doesn’t possess the faculties to bring down her foe and so she is easily prone to get side-tracked into unhealthy bouts of angst and anger and self-pity. More often than not, she falls in love with the assassin/his sibling and angsts more about what her feelings of fluff and shallow anger. Revenge Sue is destined not to fulfil the goal she was originally created for - aka revenge.

[image] Part-Kuruta Sue: One day, Togashi said: “Let there be one sole survivor of the Kuruta massacre, and let his name henceforth be known as Kurapika.” Dissatisfied with the edict laid down by the Great One, and really keen to tap into those eye-colour changing, nen-enhancing traits of the Kuruta, and the bonus of being centre of attention, from the void of travesty was born the Part-Kuruta Sue. Due to the canonical events surrounding the genocide of the Kurutas, Part-Kuruta Sue is not only filled with angst and hurt from the incident, she’ll use her unique identity and tragedy to fix herself like a parasite onto Kurapika, becoming his island of hope in a sea of despair, or just a beacon unto herself amidst a chorus of “wow, you’re so different and special!” chants.

[image] Goddess Sue: enters the fanfic as an unearthly creature sundered in time to preserve her immortal life and godly beauty. Whether she’s grand puppet master or benevolent guardian angel, Goddess Sue is the centre of the story and controls it from the start to finish. For if you are God, are you not a control freak? Goddess Sue is everyone’s lover and hero, resurrecting the dead and punishing the evil. She’s a one man show.

    Co-offenders include:
[image] Exotic Sue: In league with the Goddess Sue, Exotic Sue takes offence to being described or implied that she is ‘normal’. She is NOT normal, hence Exotic Sue. She will have either Elven type features in the form of shapely, pointy ears, or divine ichor will flow in her veins, or in a moment of crisis, she will unfurl her iridescent wings and sprinkle fairy dust on the male cast and engage in one unforgettable gang bang. Or, she’ll just assume centre stage, continue to drop tantalizing hints about the nature of her species, and because the characters are supposingly so wrapped up in her speshul form, they'll forget that they’re supposed to do something other than find as many adjectives to express their awe and wonder and admiration.

[image] Invincible Sue: With only a fine hairline crack separating Invincible Sue from Goddess Sue, first in the line of true fighting Sues, Invincible Sue generally kicks arse. A lot of arse. Including Netero’s arse in the first Hunter Exam, or impressing his arse off with her flashy nen technique. Whilst Invincible Sue can’t turn back time, perform necromancy and read minds, she’ll nevertheless have Hisoka licking her boots and bitch-slapping Illumi for his nasty treatment of Killua because of her almighty powah! Hisoka and Illumi-fans on the other hand wipe the floor with Invincible Sue’s face over and over again in their minds. There’s no quicker way to making lasting enemies than by trashing their beloved and adored, usually in the most humiliating way, right in front of their face.

    Co-offenders Include:
[image] Femi-Nazi Sue: The twisted creation of a writer who has misunderstood the concept of female strength, emancipation and independence. Instead of being sympathetic to the feminist cause, Femi-Nazi Sue is shunned by both men and women alike for Femi-Nazi Sue in reality uses her anti-man rhetoric to cloak her obnoxious character. Whether Femi-Nazi Sue’s hate for men is borne from a highly cliched past (e.g. rape), the pure irrational hate is not a flaw so much as it is an incredible turn-off and annoyance.

[image] A lesser evil to the Femi-Nazi Sue, Tomboy Sue is determined to prove herself against both men and women. Her boyish belligerence is a reflection of the author’s misguided perception that a denial of one’s gender somehow equates to personality and character. Tomboy Sue will succumb more easily to love if the right male proves himself superior. The bogus act of bravado is a measly effort to clamour for attention.

[image] Genei Ryodan Sue: As part of the Genei Ryodan, GR Sue comes complete with overly elaborate nen abilities and a mysterious past. She will often have a relationship, heavily platonic or otherwise, with the much coveted Dancho, or will become Hisoka's object of obsession - only because she outshines Machi and the other female Ryodan members so much.

[image] Sibling Sue: Taking advantage of the unexplored areas of canon, such as “who is the fifth Zoldick child?”, Sibling Sue will most likely share the same novel traits as Killua, namely the white hair, and will also be a copy-cat rebel interested in mimicking the life and adventures of Killua. But as a girl. And in pursuit of such goals, Sibling Sue will accordingly tag along with her brother and become the love interest of one of his friends. Forget about the fact that Killua’s supposed to be the special one, the heir with the most potential the Zoldick family has ever seen - because you obviously haven’t met Sibling Sue.

[....continued from previous post]

[image] Buddy Sue: Is a person Gon and Killua are likely to bump into, literally, on the road as they wander towards some inconsequential destination. After an elaborate exchange of pardons, names, addresses, family background and hair, eye and clothing descriptions, Buddy Sue exercises her magic and instantly becomes Gon and Killua’s buddy. Which is all very good, but often Buddy Sue has no idea what she’s supposed to do after befriending the main characters. After spending the next six chapters mucking around, unless the author gets struck by inspiration, expect more mucking around.

    Co-Offenders include:
[image] Highschool Sue: She is the guide that Gon and Killua must turn to as they are inexplicably transported into the modern world and just as inexplicably find themselves attending school. Not knowing where the heck they are and what kind of crack they might have snorted, Highschool Sue takes Gon and Killua under her wing, being the only one to truly understand their origins (*wink wink*) and so having no other options to exhaust, she has to be the hero to save Gon and Killua from their confusion as they adjust and adapt to the new way of life that’s been thrust upon them. Highschool Sue will then introduce the canon characters to her friends, and if you can keep up with the poorly developed ‘original characters’, then you’ll have to slug through inimitably unconvincing romance as Highschool Sue continues to cast her spell to make sure Gon and Killua have no motivation whatsoever in finding a way home. You know, their real one?

[image] Adventure Sue: Over some trumped up reason, Adventure Sue will embroil the canon characters in an adventure they’d rather not be involved in. Adventure Sue carries the burden of maintaining the drive of the plot because if she doesn’t lead, the rest of the cast honestly can’t find the motivation to stick by her. Unsurprisingly, the reason for adventure may take the back seat, or car boot, if Adventure Sue decides that snogging one of the canon characters is more pleasurable than trudging through the descriptive hurdle of forests and mountains and cities and...anything more complicated than a living room or a campfire where two people can sit on a couch/log and smooch. So much for the adventure, huh?

    Co-Offenders Include:
[image] Try-Hard Sue: As can be seen by her outlandish costume, gravity-defying hairdo and exaggerated pose, Try-Hard Sue tries too hard to be cool, to be different, to be outstanding, to have personality that she unintentionally makes herself to look like a tedious nut-case we’d rather pretend didn’t exist. She’ll try to buddy with Killua and Gon, join their quest and scream, shout, yell all the way from the moon and back. Apart from her loud exclamations, a flashy facade that she tries to pass off as identity, she’s a pale shadow of the canonical cast whose absence would be celebrated.

[image] Assassin Sue: After the episode in which Killua tears out the heart of a serial murderer, a fangirl squealed, and from the squeal came forth Assassin Sue. Assassin Sue thinks assassination is a cool profession, and evidently has not turned her puerile mind to the moral and ethical issues stemming from such a professionl. Assassin Sue lives only to show off how radically awesome it is to be able to swing a katana back and forth to cut someone up into iddy biddy bits, then earn the ‘oh’ of wonder from Killua, Illumi, Silva, Netero or whichever poor sod happens to be in the vicinity when she makes her kill and spews out a soundbyte.

[image] Fluff Sue: Habitually coming out of nowhere and is presented to the reader as Killua or Kurapika’s lover, Fluff Sue expects to be accepted as a canon character’s legitimate love interest. In the mind of Fluff Sue, only her gorgeous looks and the ‘lovey-dovey’ flirt and banter between her and Killua/Kurapika/Hisoka/Kuroro/some-other-hot-guy matter. The contempt that Fluff Sue has for her own history, character and role in the plot is proportional to the reader’s detestation to her existence.

    Co-Offenders Include:
[image] Man-eater Sue: Commonly an older woman, Man-eater Sue is endowed with assets (read: hooters) that would have Aphrodite green with envy. Man-eater Sue is so avariciously lasvicious, her curves so delectable, that any man within a 20 meter radius of her is struck with a bout of hormone-overload, rendering them into mindless, oogling Neanderthals, drooling and lusting after that perfect, sexy body. So much time and attention is devoted to Man-eater Sue’s body and the effects of her attractiveness on men, that the author often forgets to give her some depth. Oh, the irony of being so one-dimension when one is supposed to have DD cup jugs. Man-eater Sue’s ultimate purpose is to bed the sexiest guy (Hisoka/Kuroro, and now maybe Novu, Reiza or Morau), thus turning a plotless fanfic into a M rated PWP lemon.

[image] Arranged-Marriage Sue: Killua/Illumi goes home one day and, without much kind warning, finds out that he’s engaged to Arranged-Marriage Sue, and this arrangement was made before he could even say “I’ll choose who I want, thank you very much”. Free will pretty much goes out the window, plummets down those fifty storeys and ends up as a (dead) pancake of many colours on the pavement. No matter how reluctant the male canon character is in meeting his bride-to-be, or how passionately he objects to the deprivation of his freedom, he’ll find that Arranged-Marriage Sue is really pretty, believes they are compatible, and will consequently return Arranged-Marriage Sue’s affections. Is Arranged-Marriage Sue concerned in any way, shape or form about the fact that the hands which will caress her body in the future will be hands that have ripped out countless organs?

[image] Fix-It Sue: A selfless saint, Fix-It Sue goes around the cast and helps them fix up their problems - whether it be getting one character to admit their feelings to the other, or providing counselling to help a fruitcake like Hisoka be sane again, she can do it. She can automatically diagnose the problem (could it be that the author has watched the Hunter x Hunter episodes?) and consequently can identify the solution with the accuracy of 20/20 vision. And don’t be surprised if her methods involve noble self-sacrifice. It’s all part of the deal for getting attention and adoration. Even in death, Fix-It Sue will thrive on the tears being spilled for her unrivaled generosity.

[image] Wow, I love these! They must've taken you ages to make, and with the descriptions... wow. This beats my old litmus test (that I've lost ::cryeyesout::) by like fifteen miles. They hit the nail on the head so perfectly XD!

Where'd you get the images, by the way? Google?

They took a while, but it was ok. The only bothersome point was to make sure the background colours were diverse. There are still a number of Sues I haven't labelled, such as the "Goth Sue", but I think that she can usually be slotted under "Angry Sue" or "Tragic Sue" as both contain large elements of 'people-don't-understand-the-real-me" concept.

The images were lifted from THIS website, where, in the 'Listes de Smiley', you have to click on "titine" and jump to page 82. The last 10+ pages are all anime/game girls. For example, "fix it" sue is actually Athena from SNK's King of Fighters.

As I was telling HL, I think the process of making those icons was just as fun as drafting up the descriptions themselves. However, I believe I have hit my limits with using Photoshop. I think animated smilies are about as far as my graphics skills will allow.

Which reminds me, I'm going to start posting up my animated smilies at DA. I wonder if I still remember my account name and password!

[image] You're kidding, right! LOL! No wait - she was part Kuruta, a sister of Kurapika and also a part of the Ryodan? Geebus, you're going to kill me with the laughter one of these days. Do you think that part kuruta/sibling/ryodan sue deserves an icon and class all of her own?

... Yeah. She was Kurapika's sister (which automatically made her Part Kuruta Sue), was a member of the Ryodan (who they picked up and was impressed with immediately!), and have I mentioned that she matchmade Kurapika and Kuroro? No? There you go. [image]

Super Sue ! I think the Part Kuruta who ends up as Kurapika's relative needs to be whacked with a bat. [image]

[image] Dangit! I almost remember what the fic's called. Did the Mary Sue by any chance have an ability to shape-change into a Leopard? If I recall, she was also the love interest of Hisoka as well. She ended up dying and every was Very SadTM. She would have been a: Part-Kuruta, Genei Ryodan, Fix-it Sue.

Gees, do you think I should consolidate some of these sues so that an original character doesn't get slapped with 3-4 titles?

I don't remember the leopard bit, but she DID die. Forgot also about the Hisoka part. I think, perhaps, she had killed my brain by then. Sibling Sue also. XD

No, no. [image] The number of Sue badges a Sue gets can be a measure of her Sueness, too! Also, if the badges are co-offendor-level or otherwise.

The thing is, most people who write stories with Sues don't even realize they've written stories with Sues. If you point it out to some, they'll get defensive and be in outright rage. I speak from experience (sadly, I wasn't always on the side I wanted to be [image] . I've been an offender of a Sue, most unfortunately.)

Anyways, priceless list. I suppose it's biased towards HxH, because of the clan thing and so on, but still so, so true towards FF. Net and fanfiction in general. But, you know, if there weren't crappy fanfics, we wouldn't feel the need to have the GOOD fics be held in high regard (not sure if this is a good or bad thing).

I feel so sorry for people that are named Sue :D.
